As Wales prepares to welcome the new year, the Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for strong winds and heavy rain, likely to cause widespread disruption.

Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 75mph in some areas, with coastal and hilly regions particularly affected. Inland, gusts of around 60mph are anticipated. A separate alert for heavy rain predicts up to 40mm (1.6in) falling widely, with as much as 80mm (3.2in) across higher ground.

The rain warning is active from 9am to 9pm on New Year’s Day and covers large parts of Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, and the Valleys. Meanwhile, the wind warning spans the entire country, lasting from 9am on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday.

Residents are urged to take precautions and expect travel delays, potential power outages, and challenging conditions on the roads. Stay updated and plan ahead to ensure a safe start to 2024.
