Welsh rugby legend Gerald Davies has been awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours, recognizing his exceptional contributions to rugby union and his extensive voluntary and charitable work. The 79-year-old, originally from Llansaint, Carmarthenshire, expressed his astonishment, stating he was “dumbstruck” by the honour.
Davies’s illustrious rugby career includes scoring 20 tries in 46 Tests for Wales during the 1960s and 1970s. He is among a select group of Welsh players to have secured three Grand Slams. Beyond his playing days, Davies made significant contributions as an administrator, serving as the British and Irish Lions manager for the 2009 tour to South Africa and as president of the Welsh Rugby Union from 2019 to 2023.
Reflecting on the knighthood, Sir Gerald acknowledged the unwavering support of his family, friends, and colleagues throughout his career, emphasising that such achievements are not accomplished alone. He was previously honoured with a CBE in 2003 for his services both on and off the rugby field.
In addition to Sir Gerald’s knighthood, the New Year Honours list includes other notable Welsh figures. Paralympian Sabrina Fortune, who clinched gold in the women’s F20 shot put at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, has been appointed a Member of the British Empire (MBE). Fortune, from Mold, Flintshire, is celebrated as the world’s leading women’s F20 shot putter, having set multiple world records and securing three world titles. She expressed her elation upon receiving the honour, highlighting the significance of such recognition for athletes.
The King’s 2025 New Year Honours list features a total of 58 recipients from Wales, acknowledging a diverse range of achievements and contributions across various fields.
