India and Nigeria Bid to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games

The race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games is officially on, with India and Nigeria submitting their formal proposals for the centenary event by the August 31st deadline. This follows an unprecedented, overarching interest in the new, collaborative host selection process.

Commonwealth Sport (CS) President Dr. Donald Rukare praised the “dynamic and ambitious spirit” of both nations. He noted that the bids from these two “sporting powerhouse nations” demonstrate the continued significance of the Games and the appeal of the new, sustainable hosting model. Dr. Rukare was also “inspired” by how the proposals aim to align with national sports policies to create lasting legacy benefits for local communities.

CS CEO Katie Sadleir CNZM highlighted that this flexible hosting model, successfully pioneered by Glasgow for the 2026 Games, is inspiring a wider range of countries to consider hosting in the future. “Today’s announcement also sends a strong signal to our athlete community that the Commonwealth Games remains a major milestone in the global sporting calendar,” she said.

The next step is a review by the Evaluation Commission, chaired by CS Vice President Sandra Osborne KC. The commission will assess the bids and hear in-person presentations from both India and Nigeria in London in late September. The commission will then recommend a host to the CS Executive Board, with the final decision from the 74 member nations and territories to be made at a General Assembly in Glasgow in late November.

The new host selection process, launched in January, moves away from a traditional bidding process. It allows potential hosts to work collaboratively with CS to co-create innovative and tailored proposals. While Canada has decided to postpone its hosting ambitions for a future Games, its contribution to the process has been deeply appreciated, proving the success of this new collaborative approach in generating global interest and ensuring meaningful participation from all members.
