The city is renewing its commitment to ending gender-based violence, celebrating 20 years of the ‘Light a Candle Vigil’ and launching a vital new support initiative for secondary schools.

Cardiff is taking a strong stand this White Ribbon Day (November 25th). The Council is working towards its fourth White Ribbon Accreditation, using the theme ‘We Speak Up’ to encourage everyone to challenge harmful behaviours and attitudes that allow gender inequality to persist. This commitment involves a key partnership with the charity BAWSO for the 20th anniversary of the Light a Candle Vigil Event. Cardiff Council is proud to reaffirm its commitment to ending violence against women and girls as part of White Ribbon Day. This year’s theme, ‘We Speak Up,’ is a powerful call to action, urging every resident and organisation to actively challenge the harmful attitudes and systems that allow gender-based violence to continue.

The Council’s work towards its fourth White Ribbon Accreditation shows a dedication to creating a culture where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. Importantly, this commitment includes taking a stand against rigid gender norms and any form of sexism that puts women and girls at risk.

A significant event this year is the partnership with the charity BAWSO. Together, they are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Light a Candle Vigil Event. The day begins with a march from Cathedral Road, culminating in a service at Llandaff Cathedral. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the work still to be done and a celebration of community support.

The Council has prioritised supporting the city’s next generation. Following a successful initiative last year at primary schools , proceeds from White Ribbon fundraising have been used to send support packs to every secondary school in Cardiff.

These packs contain calming resources, such as fidget toys and other tools, designed to help students who may have experienced trauma or need aids to regulate their emotions. These resources are accompanied by information on training and support available to schools on the issue of Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse, and Sexual Violence.

White Ribbon Ambassador and Cabinet Member, Cllr Chris Weaver, highlighted the importance of this ongoing work: “This White Ribbon Day, Cardiff Council is speaking up to ensure that respect, safety, and equality are not just ideals, but everyday realities for women and girls in our city.”

He emphasised the city’s status as a CEDAW city (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women), which commits the Council to embedding gender equality and women’s rights in everything they do.

“We all have a role to play in challenging harmful behaviours and supporting those affected by gender-based violence. By working together, we can help build a safer, more equal Cardiff for everyone.”
