With extra activities running in the Science Theatre and Planetarium every day through half-term, the Science Discovery Centre in Cardiff Bay is the perfect place for fun-seeking families over the school holidays. From February 22 to March 2, visitors of all ages can experience the live science show ‘Ocean Extravaganza’ in the Science Theatre: audiences can test their knowledge of the seas with a fishy fact quiz, watch how dry ice reacts when dropped in water, and prepare for an explosive finale — ear defenders will be provided!

Visitors can also enjoy Star Tours in the 360° Planetarium. Suitable for adults and children aged 7+, the presentation shows stunning 4K images of space that stretch to the edges of the Milky Way and beyond, guaranteed to stir curiosity in even the youngest audience members. Both Ocean Extravaganza and Star Tours can be added to any booking for an additional charge. The February half-term holiday is one of the busiest times of year at Techniquest, so the science discovery centre will be extending its opening hours by an hour either side of its usual times: opening at 9 am and closing at 6 pm, giving visitors even more time to explore all its interactive exhibits and to create special family memories.

Whether it’s trying to withstand the force of a Hurricane, controlling arcing plasma trails, or piloting an underwater ROV — there’s no age limit on the fun to be had on the exhibition floor. Through a partnership with Transport for Wales, families opting to travel to Cardiff Bay via train can also benefit from a 25% discount in Techniquest’s Shop — which is full of fun gifts, science books and pocket-money items to satisfy curious minds — by simply showing their train ticket or proof of purchase at the Shop desk.

Techniquest Director of Experiences Gareth McTiffin said:

“The school holidays serve as the perfect time for the whole family to come and enjoy a day at Techniquest. “Visitors will get the run of the centre until 6 pm and can leave for a stroll or enjoy lunch at Coffee Mania — located next door and operating through our opening hours — without having to worry about losing their place. Simply showing their wristband to the staff at the front desk will allow for re-entry, giving them the freedom to explore the Bay and ensuring a great experience at any time of day.”

As one of the busiest holidays of the year for the centre, there are several things that Techniquest does to make the experience more accessible for those who may find it a little overwhelming. These include providing ear defenders that can be borrowed from the front desk, Sensory Bags that include a variety of toys and guides — which can be hired for the duration of the visit — plus offering a multi-use, private space called The Pod, where visitors can take some time away from the exhibition floor if needed. Techniquest recommends booking tickets in advance at techniquest.org.
