As part of Cardiff’s commitment to sustainability through the #OnePlanetCardiff initiative, Cardiff Council is offering residents free trees to plant in their gardens, helping to increase tree canopy coverage to 25%. Whether you’re looking to create a haven for wildlife, improve air quality, absorb carbon emissions, add seasonal interest, or enhance privacy in your garden, the Coed Caerdydd project has a tree for you. Planting a tree is also a meaningful way to honour a loved one while contributing to a greener, healthier city.

A Variety of Native Trees to Choose From

The trees are all native or naturalised species suited to small and medium-sized gardens. Residents can choose from individual trees like Beech, Hawthorn, and Rowan, or opt for a mixed species pack. If you’re unsure which trees would be best for your space, the expert team behind the initiative is on hand to offer guidance.

How to Claim Your Free Trees

Each household can claim up to five free trees, and in certain cases—such as for hedgerows—additional trees may be available upon request. Please note that these trees are small whips (60-80cm in height) and will need to be collected from Forest Farm.
