As the temperature drops and the cost of living remains a concern, Cardiff’s hubs and libraries are once again opening their doors to provide Warm Welcome Spaces, a vital, free, safe and comforting resource for local residents.
These aren’t just places to stay warm; they’re community anchors offering essential support and connection throughout the autumn and winter months.
You’re welcome to drop into your local hub or library during regular opening hours to enjoy a comfortable environment without any pressure or requirement to spend. These free spaces offer much more than just warmth:
- Comfort and Connection: Grab a hot drink and light snack, relax, read or simply connect with others in a friendly and comfortable environment.
- Events and Activities: Hubs and libraries run a wide range of weekly events and activities for all ages. You can find out what’s happening near you on the Cardiff Hubs website.
- Digital Skills: Need a hand with your phone, tablet, or getting online? Digital support is available to help people get to grips with their devices and learn new skills.
The Warm Welcome initiative is specifically designed to help those facing financial pressures and rising costs this season. While you’re there, you can easily access confidential advice and support on critical issues, including:
- Housing and Benefits: Get information and guidance on topics like Pension Credit and accessing other benefits you may be entitled to.
- Debt Advice: Find debt support services to help manage your finances.
- Grants and Discounts: Learn about available financial assistance, grants and discounts to help ease the pressure of high bills.
Councillor Lee Bridgeman, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, highlighted the ongoing importance of the service: “Our Warm Welcome spaces have been a lifeline for many over the past two winters. With challenges still facing our communities, we’re bringing them back for another year to make sure everyone who needs this support gets it. Whether you need a chat and some company or practical advice, our teams are ready to support you.”
Councillor Peter Bradbury, Cabinet Member for Tackling Poverty and Supporting Young People, encouraged residents to reach out: “This time of year can be really difficult for many people, worried about high bills and rising costs. Our Advice teams are well-prepared to support everyone who needs our help, so I really want to encourage anyone who is facing money struggles to get in touch and find out how we can help.”
The council remains committed to working with local community organisations to extend the reach of these essential services across the city, ensuring help is available where it is needed most.
