WALES KICKS OFF EURO 2028 AS CARDIFF SECURES OPENING MATCH

Cardiff has officially secured one of the most prestigious honours in international sport: hosting the Opening Match of UEFA EURO 2028. The news confirms the Welsh capital’s reputation as a world-class destination for major events, guaranteeing a thrilling start to the tournament on Friday, 9 June 2028 at the iconic National Stadium of Wales.

This is just the beginning of a sensational summer of football for Wales. The city is set to stage a total of six matches, including elimination rounds like a crucial Last 16 clash and an exciting Quarter Final, alongside thrilling group stage matches. The tournament, staged across the UK and Ireland, will be the largest sporting event ever jointly hosted by the co-host nations.

For Cardiff, this is huge. It’s a chance to give fans across Europe and beyond a warm Welsh welcome and promise an electric atmosphere for every game played here. This is also the opportunity to champion every single local business around the city.

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, highlighted the significance of the announcement:
“Hosting the opening match of UEFA EURO 2028 is a tremendous honour for Cardiff and a testament to our city’s reputation as a world-class destination for major events. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that will bring people together, inspire pride, and deliver significant economic and social benefits for our communities.”

With less than 1,000 days to go, the city is already working closely with UEFA and local partners to deliver a true celebration. “The eyes of the footballing world will be on Cardiff on June 9th,” Cllr Thomas added. “We’re looking forward to welcoming fans to experience the very best of Welsh hospitality and culture.”

The benefits of hosting a tournament of this scale stretch far beyond the pitch. An independent assessment anticipates that UEFA EURO 2028 will generate up to £3.6 billion in socio-economic benefits across the UK and Ireland between 2028 and 2031.

As a host city, Cardiff is set to see direct and lasting gains. The huge influx of international visitors is expected to create jobs and significantly boost the regional economy, providing direct gains for local businesses and suppliers.

Furthermore, dedicated training and volunteering programmes are being developed to provide new opportunities for local people, helping to develop essential skills and opening pathways into employment long after the final whistle blows.

The tournament will also feature the largest-ever UEFA EURO Community Programme. These key initiatives, which are currently being developed, will harness the power of sport and culture. The goal is to bring communities together, promote inclusivity, and inspire positive change throughout Cardiff and Wales. EURO 2028 is truly set to deliver lasting benefits and an amazing legacy for the region.
