Victoria Park Unveils Brand New Outdoor Gym

Cardiff’s beloved Victoria Park just got even better for fitness enthusiasts. A fantastic new outdoor exercise area has officially opened, offering park visitors an incredible opportunity to elevate their workouts, all without a membership fee.

Gone are the days of needing a costly gym pass or pre-booked class to get your sweat on. This state-of-the-art facility is packed with equipment designed to challenge and inspire, including pull-up bars, leg lifts, dip benches, tyre flips, and jumping blocks. It’s the perfect spot for anyone looking to incorporate calisthenics, bodyweight exercises, into their routine, regardless of age or ability.

“Outdoor exercise areas like this mean there’s no need to book a class or even pay for a gym membership,” says Cllr Jennifer Burke, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events. “That ability to just turn up and exercise, especially in such beautiful surroundings, will help encourage even more people to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of exercise.”

The beauty of this new space lies in its accessibility. Individuals can drop in for a solo session, and it’s even robust enough to accommodate group classes of up to 20-30 people at a time. The low-maintenance equipment is built to last, ensuring this fantastic resource will be a staple of Victoria Park for years to come.

Local resident and personal trainer, Becky Adams, is thrilled with the new addition. “Calisthenics is a really inclusive, accessible sport. It’s a real passion of mine and to see a park like this is a real joy,” she shared.

Chris Flynn, who already runs popular fitness classes in the park, is equally enthusiastic. “Calisthenics is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe,” he explains. “It’s just reintroducing basic movement patterns, so we go into later life being able to reach above our head, so we can bend down to pick up shopping without slipping a disk. That’s what calisthenics is about. It’s free, and this gym will be here in 25 years, it’s robust, and I’m really excited to put it to use, and hopefully when people see us doing it, it’s just such an open environment, they’ll come and get involved.”

This new fitness zone perfectly complements Victoria Park’s already impressive array of amenities. The Grade II listed park also boasts tennis courts, beach volleyball, a multi-use games area, a children’s play area, and a splash pad, making it a true hub for community recreation. It’s no wonder Victoria Park is one of twenty Cardiff Council managed parks and green spaces to have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag.

So, next time you’re looking for a new way to get active, head down to Victoria Park and discover the fantastic new outdoor gym.
