Transport for Wales Adds Extra Services for Cardiff Half Marathon

With over 25,000 runners expected to descend upon Cardiff for the Half Marathon This Sunday, getting to the start line stress-free is a top priority. Transport for Wales (TfW) is stepping up, announcing additional train services and capacity to ensure smooth travel for participants and spectators.

Building on successful customer feedback from last year, TfW is providing even more train capacity to meet the growing demand.

Runners and supporters heading into Cardiff will benefit from earlier morning train services from key locations, including:

  • Treherbert
  • Aberdare
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Caerphilly
  • Barry Island
  • Penarth
  • Hereford
  • Newport

These extra services are specially timed to deliver you to the start line near Cardiff Castle, which is just a short 12-minute walk from Cardiff Central station. Post-race services will also be in place to get everyone home safely and quickly.

While essential engineering works are taking place on some routes, dedicated bus services will be available in all affected locations. This ensures participants and spectators can still reach the city well in time for the race to start at 10am.

Bus replacement services will be operating on the following lines:

  • Maesteg line
  • Ebbw Vale line
  • Rhymney line

For a complete breakdown of all train services and bus options, be sure to check the official TfW website here https://tfw.wales/places/events/cardiff-half-marathon

TfW Customer Delivery & Events Planning Manager, Georgie Wills, emphasized the importance of the planning: “We saw how much of a difference extra services made to people attending the race last year, so we were keen to build on that and make sure runners could get to the start line with ease again this time around. Taking the train straight into the heart of Cardiff is still the easiest and most stress-free way to arrive, so there’s no need to worry about parking or lifts.”

Matt Newman, Chief Executive at Run 4 Wales, added, “The extra services went down extremely well last year, so it’s fantastic that we’re able to offer even more options to runners for getting to this year’s start line more sustainably.”

Before You Go

  • Check Your Journey: Passengers are strongly advised to check their journey details in advance, especially to confirm timings and any bus replacement services.
  • Support on Hand: TfW Customer support teams will be out in full force to assist passengers and maintain a smooth travel experience for both runners and supporters.
