The BBC Proms are Coming to Bristol

The world-famous BBC Proms are returning to Bristol, bringing a weekend of incredible music to the city. While our city is a powerhouse of culture, sometimes it’s worth a short trip for something truly special. This August, the world-renowned BBC Proms is taking over Bristol Beacon for a spectacular weekend, and it’s an unmissable event for anyone in the capital.

From Friday, August 22, to Sunday, August 24, Bristol will be a hub of classical music, showcasing a mix of international talent and home-grown South West innovation. With a quick journey across the Severn, you can be part of this world-class series of concerts, and it’s easier to get there than you might think. Trains from Cardiff Central to Bristol Temple Meads take as little as 42 minutes, with tickets starting from around £8.60 when booked in advance. National Express coaches are also a fantastic option, with fares from £5 and a journey time of just over an hour.

A Weekend of Unmissable Performances

The Proms weekend offers a diverse programme that will appeal to all tastes. A major highlight is the return of Bristol-based Paraorchestra, who will present a brand new show in collaboration with folk duo The Breath and composer Oliver Vibrans. This promises to be a “genre-defying” and “life-affirming” performance that you won’t hear anywhere else.

For those who love a traditional classical concert, the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera will be returning on Sunday, August 24. Under the baton of Carlo Rizzi, they will present a rich Italian programme, including works by Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, and Elgar’s In the South. It’s a fantastic chance to see our very own WNO on a different stage and celebrate their incredible talent.

Free and Accessible Events

The BBC Proms is committed to making classical music accessible to all, and this is reflected in the numerous free and low-cost events on offer. Promming tickets for the main concerts are available for just £8, but you can also enjoy live music for free:

  • BBC Introducing Showcase: On Saturday, August 23, five emerging artists from the South West, including Chloe Foy and Lady Nade, will perform on the Bridgehouse stage. It’s the perfect way to discover the next big thing.
  • Classical DJ Set: On the same evening, BBC Radio 3 presenter Georgia Mann will be spinning classical tunes in the Stalls Bar, offering a fun and relaxed introduction to a huge range of composers and musical eras.

So, while we’re enjoying our own incredible events in Cardiff this August (like Tom Jones at Cardiff Castle!), why not plan a short trip to Bristol to immerse yourself in the magic of the BBC Proms? With easy travel and a stunning line-up, it’s an opportunity to experience world-class music and support some of the best talent the UK has to offer.
