Schools Come Together for Girls’ Football Festival

The final Girls’ Primary Football Festival for the school year concluded on June 20th, marked by a day of high energy, vibrant color, and spirited celebration at the Centre for Sporting Excellence. This significant event, held to honour Wales Women’s historic qualification for the UEFA Women’s Euro competition, brought together 120 enthusiastic girls from 12 primary schools across the borough for a day of friendly football.

A World of Nations on the Pitch

Each participating school represented a different country, adding a unique international flair to the festival. Teams went all out to creatively embody their chosen nation’s identity, with prizes awarded for the most imaginative efforts. The dedication from both pupils and staff was evident in the impressive display of flags, chants, and themed kits.

Matches were played across two mini-pitches in a round-robin format, with excellent support from Coleg y Cymoedd students who competently refereed and assisted with managing the day’s activities. While individual trophies were presented for Player of the Day, Save of the Day, and Goal of the Day, every participant received a medal in recognition of their involvement and effort.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The day concluded with a large group photo and a resounding cheer for Wales, perfectly encapsulating the celebratory and proud spirit that defined the event.

Councillor Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, commented on the festival’s success: “This festival was a brilliant way to bring young people together to celebrate a huge milestone for women’s football in Wales. The enthusiasm and teamwork on show was fantastic, and events like this are a great example of how we can inspire the next generation to stay active and get involved in sport.”

Organisers extended their sincere gratitude to all the schools, staff, and volunteers who contributed to making the event such a success. With such strong participation and visible enthusiasm, the future of girls’ football in Caerphilly appears brighter than ever.
