Refurbishment of Cardiff Dogs Home underway after £500,000 fundraising effort

Cardiff Dogs Home is getting a much-needed facelift, with major refurbishment work officially underway to upgrade facilities for lost and abandoned dogs. This exciting project, which will significantly improve the welfare of dogs in the city, is all thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts of The Rescue Hotel, a local charity.

The Rescue Hotel, founded in 2020, launched a massive campaign spearheaded by former Welsh rugby captain and ambassador Sam Warburton. Their hard work paid off, raising over £500,000 to transform the kennels, including a generous £180,000 donation from the Pets Foundation.

The renovation is being completed in two phases. The first phase, which has already begun, will turn the current stable block of four kennels into a modern space with eleven new units. The second phase will see the forty kennels in the main building replaced with thirty-two state-of-the-art units.

“These improvements will make a real difference to the welfare of the dogs,” said Cllr Norma Mackie, Cardiff Council Cabinet Member. “We’re incredibly grateful to The Rescue Hotel and all their supporters for making this possible.”

Matthew Acreman from The Rescue Hotel shared his excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled to see work finally begin. A huge thank you to all our supporters, funding partners, and the businesses who’ve stepped up to help by donating materials as well as their time and expertise to bring the project to life. Together we’re creating a better future for the dogs who need us most.”

The project has received a huge wave of support from local businesses, including RNF Group, Atlantic Recycling, Mike Gulley of Keyline and Llanharan Concrete, BECT Building Contractors, Gwalia, Monay Limited, Atkins Realis, Knox and Wells, and Capital Construction Training Group. Their contributions are helping to bring this much-anticipated project to life, promising a brighter future for Cardiff’s most vulnerable dogs.
