Cardiff’s skyline could be set for a dramatic transformation, with plans revealed for a 50-storey skyscraper in the city centre. If approved, the 580ft (180m) tower would become the tallest building in Wales, surpassing Swansea’s 107m Meridian Tower and even towering above the Principality Stadium.
The proposed development, located between Wood Street and Rose Lane, would feature more than 500 apartments alongside an atrium, meeting rooms, a bike hub, café, and an enclosed glass rooftop terrace offering panoramic views across Cardiff and beyond. Inspired by New York’s iconic Equitable Building, the design follows a tripartite structure with a distinct base, middle, and top.
Developers Reap 3 Limited, a subsidiary of Bluecastle Capital, say the project builds on the success of Cardiff’s Central Square regeneration. It follows previously approved plans for a 35-storey tower on the same site in 2023.
While many welcome the ambitious plans, not everyone is convinced. Nerys Lloyd-Pierce, chair of Cardiff Civic Society, has criticised what she calls the city’s “obsession” with tall towers, suggesting more liveable, human-scale designs should be prioritised.
If given the green light, the new skyscraper would also include two staircases, five lifts, and a neighbouring pavilion restaurant and bar, cementing its place as a major new landmark for the capital.
