Louis Rees‑Zammit sets aside NFL dream and heads home to rugby

He lit up rugby pitches across the globe before chasing an NFL dream and now, Louis Rees-Zammit is officially on his way back. The 24-year-old Penarth-born winger has confirmed his return to rugby, 18 months after his headline-grabbing move to the United States.

Rees-Zammit stunned the rugby world in early 2024 by stepping away from the sport he grew up with to join the NFL’s International Player Pathway programme. His bold American adventure saw him sign with the Kansas City Chiefs, and later join the Jacksonville Jaguars, though he never featured in a regular-season game.

Now, just a month before the new NFL campaign kicks off, Rees-Zammit has made the call to return and rugby fans in Wales (and beyond) couldn’t be happier.

“I’ve got an exciting announcement to make,” he shared on social media. “I’ve decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby. It’s been a great experience but it’s time to come home.”

The timing, he says, allows him to reset and prepare for the new season. “There’s only one thing that’s on my mind — coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can’t explain how excited I am. There’ll be more news soon, but for now… see you soon, rugby fans.”

A return that’s more than sentimental

Rees-Zammit’s rise through the ranks was rapid and electric. From debuting as Gloucester’s youngest-ever Premiership player at 18, to dazzling in the 2021 Six Nations, his flair earned him a place on the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa later that year. While he didn’t make a Test appearance against the Springboks, he continued to grow into a cornerstone of Welsh rugby with 14 tries in 32 Tests before taking a break after the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Now, he returns with fresh perspective, new skills, and undimmed ambition, just in time for a new chapter under Wales’ incoming head coach Steve Tandy.

With Wales breaking their losing streak this summer with a win in Japan, fans are hopeful that Rees-Zammit’s return could add the spark the national team needs ahead of the November internationals.

What’s next for the hometown hero?

While no club has yet been confirmed, speculation is already swirling, from a Gloucester homecoming to interest abroad. What’s certain is this: Louis Rees-Zammit is back, and Cardiff will be watching closely.

A local lad who chased a dream and returns wiser, stronger, and still just 24? That’s a comeback story we can all get behind.
