Japanese Ramen Spot Tonkotsu to Open First Welsh Location in Cardiff City Centre

A much-loved Japanese ramen brand is bringing its signature bowls of comfort to Cardiff, marking its first venture outside of England.

Tonkotsu, renowned for its rich, homemade noodles and broths, is set to open its latest restaurant at 7 High Street in the heart of the city centre. The move signals a major step in the brand’s UK expansion—and a delicious new addition to Cardiff’s growing food scene.

Founded in 2012 by Ken Yamada and Emma Reynolds, Tonkotsu takes its name from the creamy, pork-based broth that hails from Japan’s southern Kyushu region. Since opening its first site in Soho, London, the restaurant has earned a loyal following for its dedication to authentic Japanese flavours, with noodles, broths and gyoza freshly made in-house each day.

Now boasting 18 restaurants across England—including in London, Birmingham, Brighton, and Bristol—the Cardiff location will be its first in Wales. Planning permission for the new restaurant has been approved by Cardiff Council, paving the way for the transformation of 7 High Street, currently occupied by Bernstein’s Curtain Specialist. The long-standing interiors shop has been looking to move online and mobile-based since late 2023.

Tonkotsu’s arrival is expected to draw both ramen aficionados and curious newcomers, adding yet another dynamic flavour to Cardiff’s already diverse dining landscape.
