The Welsh Government’s new AI Plan acts as the definitive guide to embracing AI’s transformative power responsibly.
Launching swiftly after the announcement of the crucial AI Growth Zone for North Wales, the entire strategy is built on a clear mandate; to bolster our economic growth, enhance essential public services in both Welsh and English and proactively equip local people with the skills necessary to thrive in an AI-shaped future.
One of the most exciting strategic pillars focuses intensely on economic growth. The goal is simple but ambitious, to forge a thriving AI sector that supports the creation of more skilled jobs, makes Wales a more attractive place to work, and attracts serious global investment.
Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, summed up the enthusiasm: “The AI Plan for Wales shows our ambition to capitalise on the vast opportunities of AI to help us deliver excellent public services, unlock inclusive economic growth and equip people with the skills to thrive in a modern world.”
Wales is uniquely positioned to capitalise on this future growth, thanks to its size and agility, which makes it ideal for piloting and scaling innovative AI solutions nationally.
We’re already seeing this confidence on the global stage via :
- The Data Centre Boom: Wales is home to significant hyper-scale data centre campuses, including a £12 billion investment announced by Vantage and a major AI-focused centre by Microsoft in Newport. This demonstrates significant external confidence in Wales as a strategic location for the future.
- Innovation & R&D: Our universities, including Cardiff, Swansea, and the University of South Wales, are internationally recognised for their expertise in AI, cybersecurity, consented health data access, and Compound Semiconductors, the world’s first cluster of which is hosted right here in Wales.
The benefits of this brilliant new technology aren’t just for big business; they’re already making a real, positive difference in our essential public services. Across Wales, AI is being embraced, from personalised learning in schools to faster diagnostics in the NHS.
A fantastic pilot program in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, in partnership with the Centre for Digital Public Services (CDPS), demonstrates the direct impact on patient care. They’re exploring how AI scribing technology can reduce the administrative burden for clinical teams in children’s neurodevelopmental services. This technology transcribes and summarises clinical conversations, allowing staff to focus more on the children and their families and less on time-consuming paperwork.
The early feedback is incredible. Kath Bowen, Operational/AHP Lead for the Paediatric Neurodiversity Assessment Service, confirmed the value of the tech: “AI scribe technology has been a valuable addition to our service. It’s saving staff hours each week, allowing us to see more children and focus on meaningful conversations with families… This pilot shows how AI can enhance human connection, and help us deliver better, more responsive care.”
Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing Sarah Murphy reinforced this positive view: “AI has the potential to transform how the NHS works in Wales… It can also improve patient care and their experiences of treatment, as it allows staff to spend more time with children and their families.”
Crucially, the government remains mindful that these opportunities must be navigated with care. We all want to see Wales progress, but it must be done safely and fairly.
The government is committed to ensuring AI is used in ways that are transparent, inclusive, and safe. This commitment to accountability is underpinned by the established Office for AI, the independent Strategic AI Advisory Group, and ethical guidance for public sector use developed through social partnership. This is about being a knowledgeable insider, leading the way with a human-centred, ethical approach.
As the Cabinet Secretary said: “Public trust is essential and we will earn it through strong partnerships, human oversight, fair work, and a shared commitment to ethical innovation. Together, we can shape a future where AI works for everyone.”
The AI Plan for Wales reflects a fundamental shift in expectation, one that demands strong leadership and a commitment to fairness and collaboration as the nation moves to the forefront of the AI era. It’s an unmissable development that promises a thriving future for Cardiff and all of Wales.
