How to Get Around for the Cardiff 10K and Tour of Britain

Two major events mean two different sets of closures. It’s crucial to know which is which, as the timings and locations vary.

Cardiff 10K Race Closures

The 10K race begins at 10am, and a rolling road closure will be in place from 9am until 1pm along the route.

  • Race Village: The Civic Centre, including roads like King Edward VII Avenue and City Hall Road, will be closed from 5am on Saturday, September 6th, until 6pm on Sunday, September 7th.
  • Race Route: The closures will affect major city centre streets, including North Road, Kingsway, Duke Street, and Castle Street, as well as parts of Canton and Pontcanna.

Tour of Britain Closures

The Tour of Britain brings a more complex set of closures for its final stage, featuring Geraint Thomas in his last professional race.

  • Static Closures: Some roads will be closed for a longer period to set up for the race and the finish line. This includes North Road and the Gabalfa flyover, which will be closed from as early as 3am until 6pm.
  • Rolling Closures: A rolling closure will be in effect from 1:30pm to 3pm as the cyclists make their way through the city. Roads will be closed just before the riders arrive and reopened once the last cyclist and support vehicles have passed.

Getting Around

With the city centre in lockdown for much of the day, here are your best travel options.

Public Transport

  • Trains: Rail services will be very busy. Plan ahead, as Transport for Wales is running additional services. Note that planned engineering works mean no services on some routes, with rail replacement buses operating instead.
  • Buses: Local bus services will be on diverted routes while the city centre is closed. Please check your relevant bus operator’s website for specific route changes. National Express and FlixBus services will operate as usual from Sophia Gardens and North Road, respectively.

Parking

Parking will be limited.

  • Park & Walk: Available at Cardiff City Stadium from 8am to 6pm for £10 per car.
  • Sophia Gardens: This car park is a good option but has limited access, open from 8am to 9am and then again from 12:30pm after the 10K race has finished. It costs £15 for cars.
  • Civic Centre: Due to the Race Village, there will be no event parking here.
