Cardiff Council is set to build a new, inclusive sports facility in Hailey Park, with designs directly influenced by more than 180 local schoolchildren. This new space is part of a wider £2 million program to improve communities across Cardiff.
The multi-purpose facility is designed to be as inclusive as possible, with designated practice areas for football, hockey, rugby, and cricket. At its heart, a central circle will feature a half-court basketball area and volleyball markings. A separate “catch-up area” will provide a space for table tennis and seating, offering a quieter spot away from active games.
This project, which replaces the park’s existing concrete games area, is funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Scheme. According to Cllr Jennifer Burke, this new facility offers a “much wider range of different activities” and is designed to appeal to both boys and girls.
“This is about creating a space that works for everyone,” said Cllr Lee Bridgeman. “These designs have been directly influenced by what local children have told us they want.” The new facility will be located between the children’s play area and tennis courts to minimize disruption to nearby residents. The old games area will be removed and returned to green space once the new one is complete.
