End of an Era: Porthcawl’s Beloved Coney Beach Amusement Park to Close This Autumn

Cardiff, prepare for a touch of nostalgia and perhaps a final seaside jaunt, as news breaks that Porthcawl’s iconic Coney Beach Amusement Park is set to close its gates for good this October. After over a century of thrilling rides and cherished memories for generations of families, the beloved South Wales attraction is bowing out.

The Evans family, who have operated Coney Beach for over 100 years, announced the closure with “heavy hearts,” expressing their gratitude to the countless visitors who have shared in “all the fun of the fair.” For many across South Wales, including those from Cardiff and the surrounding areas, Coney Beach has been an integral part of summer holidays and day trips.

This closure marks a significant moment for Porthcawl, as the Welsh Government has acquired the site as part of a major regeneration project for the town’s seafront. The ambitious plans for the area include a mixed-use development featuring new housing (with a focus on affordable homes), retail and business facilities, a new primary school, and various new recreational and leisure opportunities. While these developments aim to revitalise Porthcawl, the loss of Coney Beach is undoubtedly a bittersweet pill for many.

The news has prompted an outpouring of sadness and fond recollections on social media, with many recalling their personal experiences and expressing concerns about the impact on local tourism. Coney Beach, with its distinctive charm and classic amusement park rides, has long been a draw for visitors from across Wales and beyond.

So, if you have cherished memories of the Helter Skelter, the Ghost Train, or simply the unique atmosphere of Coney Beach, this summer and early autumn present your last chance to experience a piece of Welsh seaside history before it becomes a part of the past. The gates will close for the final time in October, marking the end of an unforgettable chapter for Porthcawl and for all who have loved “all the fun of the fair.”
