Daffodils Bloom at Cardiff Castle for City Hospice

This August, Cardiff Castle will be transformed into a vibrant sea of yellow as City Hospice’s annual “Forever Flowers” campaign returns, offering a poignant and beautiful way for families to honour loved ones. Now in its fifth year, the initiative invites the community to dedicate a limited-edition daffodil tribute, with all proceeds supporting the vital work of Cardiff’s local hospice.

From Saturday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 10th, the castle grounds will host the stunning display of Wales’ national flower, a symbol of hope, resilience, and new beginnings. A special “Celebration of Life” event is also planned for Thursday, August 7th, providing a moment for reflection and remembrance.

Among those dedicating a daffodil is 16-year-old Lani Kirkman, who will be honouring her beloved dad, Lee. A devoted husband and father with a wonderful sense of humour, Lee, a gas engineer and passionate Manchester United fan, was tragically diagnosed with a glioblastoma in 2022, with no prior symptoms.

Lani, just 14 at the time, was a pillar of strength throughout Lee’s illness, even helping him shave his head as his hair began to fall out. Despite his diagnosis, Lee dedicated himself to volunteering, supporting projects and trials for Velindre, the Brain Tumour Charity, and Cardiff University, a true testament to his giving spirit.

In his final months, City Hospice provided Lee with invaluable specialist palliative care and counselling. They also extended their compassionate support to Lani and her mum, Lucy, offering crucial counselling during an incredibly difficult time.

“Dad lived life with joy,” Lani shared. “We loved to go on dog walks; I think that is one of the main memories I treasure.”

She fondly remembers the support she received from City Hospice: “I remember being introduced to City Hospice because my dad was having palliative care. I went for counselling and my mum also had counselling. I did art therapy at my school as well.”

Inspired by her experience, Lani is now channelling her grief into creativity, writing a 27-poem poetry book in her dad’s memory. “I am writing a 27-poem poetry book in memory of my dad to raise awareness about what I’ve been through, because I know that I’m not the only one and a lot of the time feelings can get disregarded and people don’t necessarily like talking about them,” she explained. “By writing my emotions down, I can allow everyone else to relate to how I was feeling.”

Crucially, a portion of the proceeds from Lani’s book will go directly to City Hospice. “Some of the proceeds of my book will be going towards City Hospice because of the kind and loving staff, and the care that they provided for myself and my family at such a difficult time,” she said. “I’d like to say thank you to City Hospice for all the care that they’ve given me, my mum and my dad, and to all others that are going through a similar situation.”

Lani has been a steadfast supporter of the charity, previously participating in their Sparkle Walk event, and this summer, her dedication to the “Forever Flowers” campaign is particularly touching.

“This year my mum and I purchased a daffodil in memory of my dad, and I’m really excited to see it in the castle,” Lani added.

The “Forever Flowers” display at Cardiff Castle offers a powerful and moving opportunity for the community to come together, remember those they have lost, and support the incredible work of City Hospice in providing compassionate care to families across Cardiff. Don’t miss this poignant and beautiful tribute.
