Cardiff’s independent pub, North Star is set to close this New Year’s Eve

The Cardiff hospitality scene is set to lose a cornerstone of its community as North Star, the fiercely independent pub on North Road, announces it will close its doors for the final time on December 31, 2025.

The closure marks the end of a five-year chapter for the North Star pub, which launched in August 2020. More significantly, it signals the end of an era for the historic site at 131 North Road, which has served as a local cornerstone for over 135 years.

Despite its reputation as a “Cardiff institution,” the pub has fallen victim to the same rising costs and cost-of-living pressures currently squeezing the UK hospitality industry. For owner Tom Edwards, the decision was a matter of last resort.

“This is without question the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make,” says Tom. “We’ve explored every possible option to keep North Star going, but in the current climate, we feel this is the only responsible choice left.”

Since its inception, North Star has carved out a unique niche in the city. As a truly independent venue—free from brewery leases, it became a vital “safe space” for a diverse crowd, ranging from the local student population to the city’s creative and music communities.

While its award-winning Sunday roasts and high energy karaoke nights drew the crowds, the pub’s legacy is built on inclusivity. Manager David Rowlands notes that the loss is deeply personal for both staff and regulars.

“We’re immensely proud of what this pub has stood for,” David says. “This place meant something to people and that’s what hurts the most.”

The building’s history is woven into the fabric of the city. Originally opened as the Maindy Hotel in 1888, the site later became The College Tavern before its final iteration as North Star. For generations of Cardiff residents, this corner of North Road has been a constant.

The pub’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed over the years:

  • TripAdvisor: Boasts a stellar 4.9/5 rating with over 100 glowing reviews.
  • WalesOnline: Famously described the venue as “adored by students and locals alike.”
  • National Recognition: Featured in the Mirror and mentioned in discussions surrounding the city’s food scene by critic Jay Rayner.

The North Star will remain open throughout the festive period, giving regulars one last chance to enjoy a pint in the historic venue. The team is inviting everyone who has supported them over the years to join them on New Year’s Eve for a final farewell celebration.
