What makes a neighbourhood cool? For eight years now, Time Out has been answering that exact question. A genuinely exciting roster of restaurants, cafés and bars, irrepressibly colourful nightlife and art scenes, a welcoming and diverse community and a palpable sense that a place is really having a moment. These are the ingredients that, in their eyes, make somewhere truly cool.
Last week, Time Out published the 2025 edition of our global ranking of the planet’s coolest neighbourhoods, celebrating places that embody the many different ways a place can be ‘cool’.
Leading the pack for the UK is Camberwell, London. The buzzing south-east, anchored by a strong, diverse community. Coming in second is Digbeth, Birmingham, a district that has brilliantly transformed its industrial past into a creative, forward-thinking present, with thriving indie venues.
But we’re here to talk about a true Welsh gem.
For years, Canton in Cardiff was seen by many as little more than a funnel for football fans heading to the nearby Cardiff City Stadium. Now, it stands as a must-visit neighbourhood.
Take a relaxing 30-minute stroll out of the city centre to discover a unique selection of shops and cafes. At the heart of this neighbourhood is the Chapter Arts Centre, a creative hub hosting everything from indie flicks and vogue balls to delicious cocktails. For your daytime fix, stop by Hard Lines Coffee and the new Haystack.
A shining example of Canton’s creativity is Corp Market, a dated pub brilliantly refashioned into an eclectic traders’ market. It is home to a mixing pot of shops and hubs, perfectly encapsulating the supportive community vibe.
