In just one week, our vibrant capital will host the biggest para badminton event Wales has ever seen. From July 22nd to 26th, the Sport Wales National Centre will be buzzing with the British & Irish Para Badminton International 2025, welcoming the world’s elite para badminton athletes right to our doorstep.
This isn’t just any tournament; it’s a pivotal moment for para sport in Wales, as the country aims to cement its reputation as a hub for elite athletic competition. With the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games on the horizon, the stakes are incredibly high, and the competition promises to be fierce!
“Can You Manage” the Excitement?
In the run-up to this landmark event, Badminton Wales has launched its powerful ‘Can You Manage’ campaign. This initiative features a hard-hitting video designed to challenge perceptions, highlight the incredible capabilities of para athletes, and inspire more people across the UK to get involved in para-badminton. It’s all about sparking conversations around inclusion and representation in sport, showing us exactly what’s possible when we push boundaries.
A Global Gathering in Our City
Cardiff will be a melting pot of talent, with over 300 athletes, officials, and volunteers from more than 40 nations descending on the city. You’ll witness Paralympic champions, world title holders, and rising stars across all six para badminton sport classes. Expect five days of thrilling singles, doubles, and mixed doubles action – it’s an unmissable spectacle of inspiring performances!
Home Hopes and Star Power
Keep an eye out for the seven incredible Great Britain athletes taking to the courts, with several medal hopefuls among them:
- Daniel Bethell: A Tokyo silver medallist and a true crowd favourite, ready to impress on home soil.
- Rachel Choong: A phenomenal triple world champion, aiming to continue her dominant run in SH6 events.
- Jack Wilson: Our very own local hero from Wrexham and a former Cardiff Met University student, who expressed his excitement: “It’s incredible to have such a major event in Wales. Competing on home soil in front of friends, family and supporters will be a huge boost for me and all the British players.”
More Than Just a Tournament
As Kelly Aston MBE, CEO of Badminton Wales, beautifully puts it, “This event is about more than world-class sport. It’s about challenging perceptions, creating opportunities, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.” The support from UK Sport, the Welsh Government, Sport Wales, Yonex, and Disability Sport Wales, alongside partnerships with Badminton Ireland, Badminton Scotland, and Badminton England, truly underscores the significance of this event.
Jack Sargeant, Minister for Sport, also shared his enthusiasm: “It’s great to welcome truly impressive international badminton competitors to Wales for such an exciting event… Events like this are central to our ambitions to establish Wales as a top destination for para sport, inspiring the next generation of athletes and showcasing the incredible talent within our para sport community. Pob lwc to all the competitors and organisers, and croeso i Gymru!”
