Cardiff has been named one of the UK’s nosiest cities, according to a new nationwide survey. The study reveals that locals in the Welsh capital are leaders in neighbourly curiosity, from watching deliveries to keeping tabs on new cars.
A study commissioned by Škoda UK surveyed 2,418 adults across the UK, revealing a definitive ranking of the nation’s “curtain twitchers.” While Belfast took the top spot, Cardiff secured an impressive 10th place out of 29 cities, with a score of 97 points.
The research highlights some intriguing findings about our city’s inquisitive nature:
- Beady Eyes on Wheels: An impressive 70% of Cardiff residents can identify the colour of their neighbour’s car. Many go further, with 45% knowing the make and 35% the model.
- Deliveries and Routines: Local residents are well-attuned to their neighbours’ daily lives. A significant number of locals admit to watching deliveries arrive (31%) and knowing exactly when their neighbours leave for work (28%).
- The Positive Side of Snooping: Far from being a negative trait, the survey suggests that nosiness is seen as a positive force. A third of people believe it’s a good thing, with 62% saying it helps keep the neighbourhood safe, and 35% agreeing that it builds a stronger sense of community.
The study’s findings coincide with Škoda’s new TV campaign, “Electric but Škoda,” which playfully explores the curiosity sparked by a new electric car in the neighbourhood. The campaign taps into this national trait, showing how new technology can become a talking point among neighbours.
So next time you’re glancing over the fence or noticing a new car on the street, you’re not just being nosy, you’re upholding a proud Cardiff tradition of being engaged and connected with your community.
