Building a Fairer Cardiff: Apply Now for Period Dignity Grant Funding

Third sector organisations across Cardiff have a fantastic opportunity to make a tangible difference in their communities by applying for the 2025-26 Period Dignity Grant. This Welsh Government-funded initiative aims to ensure that everyone in Cardiff has access to free, dignified, and sustainable period products.

With funding of up to £2,000 per organisation available, this grant empowers local groups to purchase and distribute eco-friendly period products, educational materials, and essential hygiene items. This is a crucial step towards tackling period inequality, as statistics show that one in ten girls in the UK can’t afford period products, and one in seven have struggled to afford them.

Councillor Julie Sangani, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Equality, emphasised the importance of the initiative: “Period dignity is a basic right, not a privilege. Through this grant, we’re empowering local organisations to make a real difference in their communities—ensuring that no one has to choose between buying food and period products. I encourage all eligible groups to apply and be part of this vital city-wide effort.”

What Can the Funding Be Used For?

Organisations can utilise the grant to provide:

  • Reusable and plastic-free period products: A significant portion of the grant (up to 75%) must be allocated to sustainable products, promoting environmentally friendly solutions.
  • Educational starter packs and awareness materials: Helping to combat stigma and promote understanding around period health.
  • Hygiene disposal bags, wet bags, and emergency clothing: Offering practical support for individuals in crisis situations.

Products must be distributed in a practical, accessible, and dignified way, whether through community hubs, food pantries, safe spaces, or outreach programmes.

A Proven Impact in Cardiff

The Period Dignity initiative has already seen remarkable success in Cardiff. Between April and December last year, over 3,000 period products were distributed across Cardiff Council hubs, libraries, and various community settings, supporting more than 1,000 individuals and families through council services.

Community groups and charities reached an estimated 1,250 people, with 100% positive feedback, users describing the service as “life-changing” and “a lifesaver for our local community.” The Council has actively partnered with organisations and charities in 71 different locations across the city, ensuring comprehensive local coverage and providing culturally sensitive and inclusive provision for asylum seekers, people with learning disabilities, and low-income families.

Beyond community efforts, Cardiff Council has invested over £1 million in its period dignity initiative in schools since 2019, providing learners with free products, tackling stigma, and improving facilities. This commitment has contributed to Cardiff’s recognition as a UNICEF Child Friendly City, showcasing the city’s dedication to prioritising children’s views and needs.
