Bronze Age Gold Jewellery Stolen in ‘Targeted Attack’ on St Fagans Museum

Bronze Age gold jewellery and other items have been stolen from St Fagans National Museum of History in a reported burglary, South Wales Police have confirmed.

Officers were called to the main museum building in Cardiff at about 00:30 BST on Monday after a report of a burglary was received.

Detective Inspector Bob Chambers, from South Wales Police, stated that two suspects are believed to have forced entry into the main building. “Several items, including Bronze Age gold jewellery, have been stolen from a display case,” he said. The stolen artefacts were on display in the museum’s ‘Wales is …’ gallery, which staff believe was specifically targeted.

Museum Wales expressed its deep sadness over what it called a “targeted attack” on the site.

The stolen items, which reportedly include ancient gold jewellery such as bracelets and possibly a lunula (a crescent-shaped piece of jewellery), represent a significant cultural and historical loss. The objects date from the Bronze Age, a period that ran from about 2,300 BC to 800 BC.

A museum spokesperson thanked South Wales Police for their prompt response and their cooperation in the investigation, also acknowledging the staff members who were on duty overnight, followed protocol, and were thankfully uninjured.

DI Chambers urged the public to provide any information they might have, emphasising that details, “no matter how small, may be relevant to the investigation.”

“An investigation is ongoing, and we urge anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible,” he added.
