Cardiff Council has thrown a lifeline to the city’s independent music scene, announcing a second round of its impactful Grassroots Music Venue Fund. Building on the massive success of last year’s initial push, which introduced nearly £200,000 into independent venues across the capital, this new funding aims to help Cardiff’s cultural hubs continue to grow and thrive.
The Cardiff Grassroots Venue Fund offers crucial capital grants of up to £7,500. The money is specifically earmarked to help venues become more financially and environmentally sustainable, though strategic projects that exceed the standard amount will also be considered.
This vital support is made possible by the UK Government alongside income generated through last summer’s series of outdoor concerts at Blackweir Fields. The fund is a cornerstone of the Council’s ongoing work to solidify music at the centre of the city’s future development.
The initial round of funding delivered tangible results across the city. It enabled established venues like Clwb Ifor Bach, Porters and Chapter Arts Centre to invest in essential equipment and accessibility improvements. Crucially, it also supported emerging spaces, helping venues like The New Moon and The Canopi and Paradise Garden, one of the independent venues who have benefitted from Cardiff’s Grassroots Venue’s Fund. Helping these independents grow into vibrant, functioning cultural hubs.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, passionately backed the initiative. “Cardiff’s grassroots venues are the beating heart of our music scene,” she said. “They nurture local talent, bring communities together and make our city a more exciting place to live. This second round of funding is about helping these spaces thrive, so they can continue to inspire and support the next generation of Welsh artists.”
The funding announcement arrives at a perfect time, as the city prepares for the return of the Cardiff Music City Festival. This two-week-long celebration of gigs, talks, installations and pop-ups, supported by Welsh Government and Cardiff Council, will take place in venues across the capital, many of which have already benefited from this fund https://cardiffmusiccity.wales/festival/
Applications for the second round of funding are open now, but venues must act quickly. The deadline for applications is 31 December 2025.
