As the song says, ‘Love is in the air’, and there are many ways of showing your appreciation to your partner, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet, as I’m talking about wine.

Here at Fine Wines Direct UK, we love our grape juice. We sing to it, cuddle it and tell it bedtime stories to keep it at its full potential. Well, some of that’s true, but as you’ve probably gathered, we really do love our wine.

Fine Wines Direct UK are an independent, specialist importer of wines and we offer a comprehensive range of wines from both leading, as well as exciting, niche producers from across the wine world.

Our wide range of interesting bottles means that our dedicated team have plenty to talk about and we love working closely with our customers, on-trade and off-trade – and, yes, we have a retail shop at 242, Penarth Road, Cardiff that is open to the public – so come on in and have a natter.

This year I’m going to help you all plan for Valentine’s Day. So, instead of that mad dash to the petrol station, picking up a tatty card and some wiper blades for your loved one, I’m going to give some hints about a nice glass to enjoy on the day of lurrrrvvve. I know it’s a bit nippy out there so let’s get bitten by the love bug, cwtch up and have a nice night in.

Fizz is always a good way to start and doesn’t have to cost the earth. We have an array of that Italian favourite Prosecco, a soft glass of bubbles with that intoxicating pop of a cork. If you fancy something a little more complex then why not look to Cava from Spain? The Marques de Caceres Cava Brut NV (Fine Wines Direct UK, £11.99) is made in the same way as Champagne, and results in a rich glass of fizz that carries an opulent, stonefruit profile with a creamy texture.

But, if you do insist on Champagne, then we have a whole raft of fizzy treats from entry-level to luxury grand marques. The sumptuous Pommery Brut Royal (Fine Wines Direct UK, £47.99) comes from the house that invented brut (dry) Champagne, courtesy of owner Louise Pommery, who was the first woman to receive a French state funeral.

You can of course, get your loved one a cheeky Laurent-Perrier gift set, that not only has a lovely bottle of the dreamy Laurent-Perrier ‘La Cuvee’ Brut but also has two lovely flutes included (Fine Wines Direct UK, £59.99). Serve chilled by a roaring fire and I’m sure things will warm up afterwards.

A trio of terrific rosé wines that will have you tickled pink

You don’t have to wait for the spring to enjoy a tasty glass of rosé and these examples will fill your heart with joy.

This blend of garnacha and tempranillo, Marques de Caceres Excellens Rioja Rosado (Fine Wines Direct UK, £11.99), hits the sweet spot of crunchy cherry fruit flavours and rich peachy notes. It is also the recent recipient of Best Rioja Rosé in a wine trade magazine and is one of our favourites. Y Viva Espana!

LOU by Chateau Peyrassol, Cotes de Provence (Fine Wines Direct UK, £12.99), will get you dreaming of people-watching in the sunny squares of Provence. The floral bouquet is followed by soft summer fruits and a lick of crisp gooseberry notes. So well-balanced, pale and very interesting.

Chateau Peyrassol La Bastide, Cotes de Provence (Fine Wines Direct UK, £19.99). A luxurious glass of rosé, that has food at its heart. Whether paired with lobster or a rich prawn dish, this gastronomic pink has an abundance of wild strawberry and raspberry fruit with a dash of minerality through the mid-palate and a dry, elegant finish. World class.
