Renowned Welsh actor Michael Sheen has announced the establishment of the Welsh National Theatre, a new company dedicated to bringing significant Welsh stories to the stage. This initiative follows the recent closure of National Theatre Wales due to funding cuts.
Sheen, who will serve as artistic director, expressed his commitment to producing “big, bold plays” that delve into Wales’s rich history and culture. He emphasised the need for a robust Welsh theatrical canon, noting the absence of major plays about pivotal events such as Aberfan, the Merthyr Rising, and the Rebecca Riots.
The company’s inaugural production is slated for autumn 2026 at Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre. Sheen plans to star in this premiere, which will explore foundational narratives of Welsh identity. He is currently commissioning writers and engaging with organisations like Welsh National Opera and Theatr Cymru to foster collaborative efforts.
In light of recent funding challenges faced by Welsh cultural institutions, Sheen has pledged to personally finance the initial stages of the Welsh National Theatre. He aims to build the company “slowly with care and with passion and with vision and with ambition,” ensuring it can stand independently while remaining open to public and private funding opportunities.
Sheen’s previous theatrical endeavours, including his portrayal of Aneurin Bevan in the acclaimed play Nye, have been met with acclaim from Welsh audiences. The success of such productions has reinforced his belief in the appetite for Welsh stories told on a grand scale.
