Bigmoose’s Chloe Smith on Balancing Ambition and Wellbeing

I’m grateful every day to do a job I love, but even fulfilling roles can be busy and stressful, especially with deadlines and big goals. Some weeks feel like a whirlwind of meetings and a never-ending to-do list, while others offer time to reset. The key isn’t perfect balance or time-consuming self-care; it’s about small, intentional choices that keep me steady while chasing my goals. This is especially important as someone managing chronic kidney disease, where looking after my health is a priority. I love the idea of 1% improvements—tiny but consistent steps forward make a big difference over time.

As COO of a mental health charity, my role is often reactive, so setting boundaries is crucial. With daily targets, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush, but remembering my core ‘why’—leaving the world better than I found it—keeps me steady. Boundaries protect your energy so you can show up as your best self. If my schedule is full, I delegate when appropriate or decline meetings that could be an email. I’m lucky to work with an incredible team who always step up when needed. A strong team is essential, and delegating isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength that helps everyone thrive.

Some weeks demand more of me, and I’ve learned not to feel guilty about working long hours when necessary. To maintain my well-being, I focus on quick wins—like a walk between meetings or a few minutes of fresh air. It’s not about waiting for the perfect moment to rest but making time for small daily actions that compound into long-term benefits. Busy periods should be the exception, not the norm, so when quieter weeks come, I use them to recharge through rest or longer self-care. Everyone’s approach is different; the key is knowing what works for you so you’re prepared.

Managing CKD means taking a proactive approach. If I know a busy week is ahead, I take small actions in advance, like meal prepping at the weekend. That hour spent preparing means I don’t rely on last-minute, less nourishing options. Moving my body is non-negotiable—sometimes it’s a long, head-clearing walk, other days it’s just taking the stairs. These small, consistent actions add up, keeping me healthy and energised.

Managing well-being while chasing goals starts when you set them. It’s not just about identifying what you want to achieve, but also considering the context. I’ve learned it’s not always about striving for ‘more’; sometimes, it’s about honouring where we’re at. Is it a season of growth, pushing forward with big goals, or a season of sustainability, where maintaining what we’ve built is more valuable? Both are impactful in their own way.

For me, protecting my well-being isn’t about elaborate self-care or perfect routines. It’s about small, daily choices—whether meal prepping for a smoother week, moving in a way that fits my day, or simply knowing when to take a breath. It’s also about recognising when to strive and when to sustain. True success means chasing your dreams without sacrificing yourself in the process. Even if progress is just 1% each day, it all adds up in the long run.
