As we bid farewell to summer, we’re ready to embrace autumn. Nights grow longer, temperatures drop and the coats we’ve stashed away are pulled out of storage. With the brisk wind, not forgetting the rain that forever engulfs our city, the warm inside beckons us. We’re here to share some of Cardiff’s cosiest corners to spend time with those closest to us, or escape for some well-deserved alone time.

When you’re walking up the stairs to Chance and Counters, you’re greeted with a blanket of warm air, offering a cosy escape from the Welsh weather. Chance and Counters, the board game café, couldn’t be a better place to get cosy with your friends this season. Offering over 700 board games that are constantly refreshed, a game to suit everyone’s taste is guaranteed! Whether hot chocolates and wholesome games are your thing or a burger and a beer is more to your taste, you’ll find it all under one roof.

Chance and Counters is the brainchild of three friends, Luke, Steve and Richard. Like a game of dominoes, their love of board games started with one person who went on to topple the rest. Launched in Bristol in 2016, Chance and Counters eventually made its way over the bridge in 2018 and is now housed in a beautiful Victorian building on Cardiff’s High Street.

Chance and Counters combine a friendly ambience, shelves of games and a snug interior, creating the ultimate homely vibe. The choice of games range from modern complex games to family classics such as Jenga and Monopoly, although if you want to avoid ruining friendships and breaking up your family, we’d perhaps advise a less tense game than Monopoly. Board games are a fast way to get to know people and bring out people’s true colours, for better or worse! Rhys Chamberlain, Director of Chance and Counters, brands the cafe as “the home of competitive people”, with losers often settling their table’s tab.

October welcomes various events at Chance and Counters, including their weekly ‘Social Gaming’ event on Mondays from 6pm, offering a chilled evening for people to drop in and meet like-minded people. If you’re looking for plans for October 31st, you’re in luck! They’ll be throwing their annual Halloween get-together, which promises spooktacular games from their vast library, spine-chilling cocktails and a buffet to satisfy all taste buds and cater to all requirements.
