Welsh actor, writer and director Mathew David has been named as one of the 15 most promising UK screen talents in Screen Daily’s ‘15 Rising UK Writers and Directors with Global Appeal’ Sponsored by the British Film Commission. This prestigious recognition highlights emerging creatives poised to make a significant impact on the international film and television industry. David is the only Welsh creative on the list, standing alongside celebrated names such as Richard Gadd, the writer of Baby Reindeer, one of Netflix’s Top 10 Most Viewed, further emphasising his unique position in the UK’s rising screen talent.
Mathew previously earned recognition on Wales Online’s Pinc List in 2022 as ‘One to Watch’, which celebrates the country’s most influential LGBTQ+ figures. His work has also been showcased by the BBC Writersroom, featuring as part of the BBC Writers’ Voices 2024 Wales initiative, further solidifying his reputation as an important voice in British screenwriting.
Mathew debut film SKINNY FAT (BBC Wales, Ffilm Cymru) was a major success, reaching over 850,000 views and airing on BBC One Wales, BBC Three, BBC Four, and Channel 4. Tackling themes of body image and LGBTQ+ identity, the film resonated widely, earning a nomination for a Broadcast Digital Award and being shortlisted for the Iris Prize – Best British Film, sponsored by Channel 4, in 2022.
“I’m incredibly proud to be recognised alongside such talented individuals,” said Mathew. “As a Welsh, working-class creative, my passion has always been to tell authentic, compelling LGBTQ+ stories that reflect the richness and resilience of our community. Welsh LGBTQ+ voices deserve to be heard on a global stage, and I’m committed to bringing these stories to life with honesty and heart. This acknowledgement from Screen International is an incredible milestone in my journey, reinforcing the importance of diverse perspectives in storytelling.”
With a body of work that champions diverse perspectives and bold storytelling, Mathew continues to build an exciting career across film and television. He currently has a feature film and a comedy series in development, both of which focus on unique and underrepresented narratives with a distinct Welsh identity. As the UK film and television industry continues to evolve, the recognition of homegrown talent like Mathew David reflects the rising influence of Welsh creatives in shaping the future of storytelling.
