Cardiff University is set to expand its global footprint by establishing its first overseas branch campus in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Slated to welcome students in September 2025, this initiative positions Cardiff University as the inaugural Russell Group institution to establish a presence in Kazakhstan.

The Astana campus will offer degree programmes in disciplines such as education, engineering, and information technology. This strategic move comes in response to recent declines in international student enrolments in the UK, influenced by stricter visa regulations and other financial challenges facing higher education institutions.

WalesOnline reports how Professor Wendy Larner, Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University, commented on the development:

“There is significant detail to work through, but we are excited about the opportunity to bring Cardiff University’s high-quality education to a new international audience.”

This expansion reflects Cardiff University’s commitment to broadening its educational reach and adapting to the evolving landscape of global higher education. By establishing a campus in Central Asia, the university aims to attract a diverse student body and foster international collaborations, thereby enhancing its global presence and reputation.

The Astana campus is expected to contribute to the local economy and educational landscape by providing access to Cardiff University’s esteemed academic programmes. As preparations continue, further details regarding the specific courses and enrolment procedures will be announced, offering prospective students in the region an opportunity to pursue a Cardiff University education closer to home.
