Cardiff will get a brand-new railway station! After years of planning and approvals, the Welsh Government has officially given the go-ahead for Cardiff Parkway, a major transport hub set to transform the city’s east side.

Located in St Mellons, Cardiff Parkway will be the first mainline station between Cardiff and Newport since Marshfield Station closed in 1959. But it’s not just about trains—this ambitious project also includes Hendre Lakes, a 900,000 sq ft business park that aims to bring thousands of jobs to the area.

What’s in the Works?

This £120 million development will introduce four new platforms, with services expected to run up to eight times an hour to Cardiff and Newport, plus direct links to London and Bristol. The station will sit at the heart of a modern business hub, designed to attract top companies with state-of-the-art office spaces and unbeatable transport connections.

First proposed back in 2017, the project was called in for review due to its size and significance. But now, with First Minister Eluned Morgan backing the plan, everything is set to move forward.

What It Means for Cardiff

The vision for Cardiff Parkway isn’t just about cutting travel time—it’s about boosting Cardiff’s economy, creating over 5,000 jobs, and connecting Wales more efficiently to the rest of the UK. With its eco-friendly design, including green spaces and a focus on sustainability, the development is also looking to set a new standard for business parks in Wales.

When Can We Expect It?

If all goes to plan, construction will begin soon, and by 2028, Cardiff Parkway and the first phase of Hendre Lakes should be up and running. That means quicker commutes, fresh business opportunities, and a whole new chapter for Cardiff’s eastern gateway.
