Matthew Owain Rees, an 18-year-old prodigy from Cardiff, is making waves in the world of motor racing. Balancing the demands of his A-levels with his burgeoning racing career, Matt’s journey is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport. This year, he is competing in the prestigious Porsche Carrera Cup GB, adding another chapter to his already impressive resume.

Matt’s story began at the Llandow Kart Track, where he first experienced the thrill of speed at just three years old, driving his sister’s go-kart in the car park. From these humble beginnings, his talent quickly became evident, leading him to remarkable achievements. In 2021, he claimed the title of British F4 Champion, becoming the only Welsh driver to do so. His success continued as he emerged as a multiple-race winner in the GB3 Championship (formerly British F3) in 2022 and 2023.
This year marked a historic moment for Matt as he made his debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. As a rookie, he achieved pole position, a first in the 22-year history of the championship. This milestone highlights the distance he has travelled from his early karting days to the elite levels of motor racing.
Matt’s prowess on the track has not gone unnoticed. He is the youngest driver ever to be selected for the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Superstar programme, an accolade that cements his status as one of the hottest properties in motorsport today. This prestigious recognition opens doors to new opportunities and challenges, such as racing Porsche 911 GT3s in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, an event fully televised by ITV Sport. The motor racing prodigy has also recently become an ambassador for WERA Motorsport UK – yet another prestigious position for him to take pride in.
In the latest rounds at Brands Hatch, Matt showcased his skills once again, achieving second place as well as the top rookie accolade. In both races of the weekend, he also achieved back-to-back points finishes. As he gears up for the next round, which coincides with the start of his A-level exams, his determination to excel both academically and in racing is clear
