South wales fire and rescue service marks its 30th anniversary at cardiff awards ceremony

Stories of character, dedication and passion were shared at the SWFRS Beacon Awards ceremony, where everyone from firefighters to corporate staff and contractors were celebrated in style.

Held at Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the prestigious Beacon Awards were one of the highlights of the Service’s 30th anniversary year.

Finalists were selected from more than 200 entries, all nominated by colleagues in categories which included compassion, excellence, courage, integrity and innovation. The winners were then chosen by panels of staff and leaders from across the Service.

On the night, Service staff, volunteers and contractors were joined by family, friends and guests of honour, Lord Lieutenant South Glamorgan, Morfudd Meredith, High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, Jane John and Fire Service Commissioners, Vij Randeniya, Kirsty Williams and Carl Foulkes.

The evening began with a guard of honour for an impressive convoy of fire service vehicles, dating from World War II to the present day.

Chief Fire Officer Awards were presented to Group Manager Gareth Evans, Station Manager Julian Lloyd and Station Manager Beci Newton. Beci was also winner in the category for Courage, for showing resilience and integrity when working to create a culture that encourages openness, accountability and kindness.

Winners for Operational Excellence were Wildfire Tactical Advisors, Group Manager Chris Evans, Station Manager Dai Bound and Station Manager Chris Deacon. Their expertise in dealing with highly complex incidents is now being called upon far beyond South Wales. At a time when crews are facing some of their most demanding wildfire conditions, these roles are more important than ever.

The team at Joint Fire Control, who handle all the 999 calls to the Service, won the Working as One Team award, while headquarters security guard Saliman Adebayo won the award for Respect. Collecting his award, Saliman said: “I’m so humbled, honoured and grateful.”

15-year-old Oscar Logan, who had experienced a period of isolation due to a health diagnosis, received the Fire Cadet of the Year award. Oscar was praised for coming a long way in a short time, with his confidence growing enormously as a result.

When it comes to dedication to community, Crew Manager Lloyd Batstone’s enthusiasm and commitment earned him the winning Beacon Award in the category of Community Engagement.

The Unsung Hero award went to Watch Manager Mark Potter, who was praised for giving so generously to his community.

There was a standing ovation for Yvonne Edwards as she accepted her Lifetime Achievement award. Yvonne has given 50-years’ service in a variety of roles and across numerous departments. She was described as a constant source of support to others who is loyal, honest and consistently sets high standards.

Receiving her Lifetime Achievement award, along with her long-service award, Yvonne said: ““It’s just something I love doing. I’m proud, and I don’t say that easily. I’d do it all again in a minute.”

SWFRS Chief Fire Officer, Fin Monahan, who presented all the awards on the night, said: “Our values of courage, compassion, respect, integrity and excellence are not just statements on a wall. They appear in moments of decisive leadership on the incident ground, in acts of kindness quietly carried out in our communities, and in the determination of colleagues who innovate, inspire and push us forward.”
