A development comprising flats, community, and retail space in Cardiff, has been given the green light, Insider Media reports. Cardiff Council’s planning committee approved an application by Willowmead Holdings Ltd for Medallion House, Crwys Road in the Cathays suburb of the city.

The decision was in line with an officer’s report recommendation, subject to the signing of a Section 106 Agreement. Currently, the site is occupied by an office/retail premises of two to three storeys, with a car park at the rear.

Proposed is the demolition of the existing upper floors. The retained ground floor will be reconfigured with the construction of four new upper floors to the front section of the building accommodating 64 flats. A further three flats will be created in a detached block to the back of the site, at the junction of Fanny St and Daniel Street.

The retained and reconfigured ground floor will accommodate floor space for community use. The retained retail space is divided into two separate units. The remainder of the ground floor accommodates two core stair/lift areas for the upper floor residents, accessed off Gower St and Fanny St, cycle storage and refuse storage facilities and a plant room. In addition to the internal community spaces, there is a small ‘community garden’ to the rear.
