Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has achieved a significant milestone in Welsh healthcare by successfully fitting the country’s first leadless pacemaker. The groundbreaking procedure was carried out at the University Hospital of Wales, marking an exciting advancement in cardiac care for patients in the region.
The device offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional pacemakers, with no leads required to connect the device to the heart. Leadless pacemakers are implanted directly into the heart via a catheter, significantly reducing risks such as infection or complications associated with lead wires.
Dr Annika Kinch, Consultant Cardiologist at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, who performed the procedure, shared her enthusiasm for the innovation:
“This is a major step forward for cardiac patients in Wales. The leadless pacemaker offers improved safety, greater comfort, and quicker recovery times compared to conventional devices. We’re thrilled to bring this cutting-edge technology to our patients.”
The first recipient of the leadless pacemaker, 75-year-old Peter Davies from Penarth, spoke highly of his experience:
“I was amazed by how straightforward the procedure was. I feel much better already and am grateful to the team for their care and expertise.”
